Allium is afgeleid van Look, een plantengeslacht in de Lookfamilie met wereldwijd bijna 700 soorten. Het zijn meerjarige bolgewassen, variërend in hoogte van 10 cm tot 1,5 m. De planten komen hoofdzakelijk voor in gematigde streken van het noordelijk halfrond, met uitzonderingen in Chili, Brazilië en tropisch Afrika. Bekende look soorten zijn de bieslook, de knoflook en de ui.
